Grout is used to fill up the joints between tiles laid on a floor or wall. We know that there is some variation in tile sizes that needs some space to be created between tiles. During the laying procedure, quite often, plastic spacers are used to ensure that these joints are of almost equal size. The space between the tiles is then filled with grout, quite often matching the tiles, so that there is a completely impervious surface. In addition, most grout joints are sealed with sealants, to ensure that they last longer and are easy to clean.

Over time and usage, this grout starts looking dirty, because most grouts are cement based and do tend to accumulate dirt and dust. Tiles can quite easily be cleaned with detergents and water, and become shiny once again, but the grout ultimately loses this ability to bounce back, and then has to be specially cleaned, before it turns into any eyesore. Because of the cement base, grout also stains quite easily and then the grout lines will start looking dingy and disgusting, even though the tile surfaces may continue to be bright and gleaming.

You can use some home products for grout cleaning by using equal parts of vinegar and water. Spray this on the grout and use a stiff brush to clean between the tiles. You can use hydrogen peroxide instead of vinegar, if you so desire. An alternative would be to make a paste of water and baking soda and dab it on the grout lines. Allow this to remain for some time and then use a stiff brush, so that the grout gets deep cleaned. In all cases, once the grout is clean enough, you will need to rinse the floor of all the cleaning compounds, before you start using the floor again.

You can also use many of the normal household cleaning detergents to clean grout, but it is always possible to buy commercial products, which are particularly meant for grout cleaning. These cleaners need to be pH balanced, and must be sprayed on put on the grout and allowed to remain for a few minutes, so that they can act on the dirt. Where grout is discolored you can use oxygen bleach, just like you would use the cleaners. Tea oil and water can combine to remove mold and mildew from grout, as this oil has anti-fungal properties.

Once you have cleaned the grout and have got it looking bright and shiny, it is best if the grout is sealed once again with the proper sealers. This will enable it to maintain its brightness for a longer period.
